What's Happening at Bee Club

One fun thing about our neighbor, Lance Douglas, is that during COVID shutdowns, he set up an indoor observation hive in a shed on his property.  This is where and when we began our curiosity and love for bees.  We could go to the shed and watch the bees work.  We learned to spot a queen, we learned to identify what each worker bee was doing and we loved watching the bees fly in and out of the hive and dutifully guard the entrance.  It was fascinating!  

In spring of 2021, Lance helped us set up a swarm trap on Grandpa Ence's farm.  We were so excited to capture a swarm and it was a strong one!  Lance helped us transfer our swarm to a hive box that he let us paint and decorate.  We names our hive, The Hive of ExcellEnce.  

When it was time to harvest honey, we were so shocked and excited about how much honey we got with one hive!  And then Lance taught us how to purify and render the beeswax so we could make lip balm.  That was especially exciting to Anna and Evelyn!  They made their own wrappers to cover the lip balm tubes.  They had names like Queen Bee and Bee Buddies and then decided to look up what names were already registered and then thought about how our neighbor always told us we were in the club as we learned each new thing.  Or he would tell us that only bee club members get these exclusive stuffed bees, or newest bee book he had written and etc.

Bee Club was born!  And then we wanted to know what else we could make with beeswax.  We discovered lotion bars, soap, lip gloss and so forth.

We keep learning and we keep loving what we do!
